Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornaglare OR Palmira

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Modern ploughs and trenches have cut through the ancient bank, yet the thirty-four metre circle still holds its shape in Cornaglare or Palmira. The earth has been robbed for field boundaries, but the fort refuses to disappear entirely. It is a living boundary now, swallowing human history into fairy legend while demanding that people still recognize its presence.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 34m) enclosed by a substantial, although partly denuded, earthen bank which has been modified and incorporated into the field boundary. Modern trenches occur at the external foot of the bank. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
