Indicated

Crannog

What is recorded here

Indicated is a crannog in County Cavan, an artificial island built of stone, soil and intention where a household may have refused the lake rather than submitted to it. The water would have closed around its doors like a living thing, forcing every visitor to announce itself before entering. That is the shape of the place: a small flame of human will burning inside darkness, still waiting for someone to wade in and see whether the flame is real.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV).
