Fairy forts are no fairy tale. They are ancient human ringforts, misnamed later because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. Coolcor is one of those: a circular earthwork on a farm slope in County Longford, partly levelled but still shaped like a room larger than any house. The forgetting did not erase the making. It only redirected wonder, from the builders to the stories told about them.

On a SW-facing slope in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 30m) defined from SSE-S-SSW and from WSW-W-N by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.5m; H 0.5m) and by a scarp (H 0.65-1.8m) from N-E-SSE. An external fosse (Wth 5.4m; D 0.15-0.75m) is visible from W-NW-NNW and from NNE-E-SSE. From SSW-WSW the enclosing elements have been levelled. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a low outer bank, which is no longer identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
