Carran is a small Burren village where Michael Cusack helped found the Gaelic Athletic Association, giving the rocky uplands a lasting voice in Irish sport. The name means the cairn, and the place still carries that marker-like identity through limestone pasture, old church ruins, and a narrow cluster of homes near Slieve Carran. Its history layers Saint Columb’s abbey story, copper mining, and ordinary village life, suggesting that even a modest Clare settlement can shape a nation’s rituals.
