Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonpasteen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonpasteen holds a forgotten chamber where human hands shaped earth into a boundary before forgetting the name. The field swallowed the gate and the sky widened the room, yet the oval still resists the claim of grass. What was concealed there may have been a warning, a gift or a room for someone no longer remembered. The land stopped answering questions about that time and continued living around the hole in its own memory.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked oval enclosure on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been partially levelled and incorporated into pasture field. Enclosure now evident as oval area (36m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (H 0.55m; Wth 6.8m), with an external fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 2m) SW->WSW. Field boundary runs along top of scarped edge NW->NE; boundary running S from SE edge of enclosure has been removed. Farm trackway skirts E side of site. Interior slopes slightly down to W, and is under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
