Inside a Mayo cashel, two low sod-covered stone mounds mark a children’s burial ground. One presses against the inner north wall, the other abuts the south wall, small enough to be overlooked but distinct enough to be remembered. They turn an ordinary ruined enclosure into a place where young lives were honoured, abandoned, or forgotten.

In a cashel (MA073-002001). A children’s burial ground is indicated at the cashel on the 1919 OS 6-inch map. According to local tradition, two low, sod-covered mound of stones (2.4m E–W; 1.2m N–S; H 0.3m), one located against the inner face of the cashel wall at N and the other abutting the wall at S, are graves.
