Church (in Ruins)

In centre of graveyard (CO044-04001-), ruins of C of I parish church of Gortroe. Roofless rectangular church (15.27m E-W; 6.65m N-S); W end of S wall collapsed. Window ope in E gable; blocked door in W gable which originally had porch. Two splayed windows in N wall; remains of two evident in S wall. Interior overgrown. Burial vault of Mayes family at W end. This church apparently built in early 18th century to replace church which wasin ruins by 1615 and still in ruins 1694 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 221-8); church in repair 1774 (ibid.) but replaced by new church (St Peter's) 600mto NW in 1825 (which no longer survives).
