Ryefield Island

Ryefield Island is a small islet in County Cavan, Ireland. The name suggests a place where grain once grew or rye still stains the soil after rain. A narrow strip of land in a shallow lake or river bend, it may have served as a pasture, heron roost or forgotten garden. The field in its name implies cultivation, not wild desertion. Someone worked that soil, harvested it or lost it to water. The island keeps the shape of that labour even when the tools are gone.
