Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Streamstown Castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a 1655 description of a castle in repair and no trace on later maps. That absence is not a failure of record; it is the shape of the place. Any chamber, yard or hidden room must still carry the same broken pride, forcing us to invent the damage and invent the life that suffered it.
The precise location of Streamstown Castle has not been identified. The castle is depicted on the 1655 Down Survey map of Ardnurcher parish where it is described as a 'castle in repaire' (NLI, MS 723-4). The castle is not depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. There is no evidence to suggest that Streamstown House was built on the site of the medieval castle.
