Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Broughal

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

That is the Broughal fairy fort: a degraded circular bank and external fosse on a south-facing slope in County Offaly. It is the kind of place where people may have lived, hidden or raged before the land forgot the names. The measurements are clear even when the story is not.
On S facing slope on high ground. Circular area (diam 59.6m N-S; 56m E-W) enclosed by a much degraded bank (Wth 2.5m; max. ext. H 1.4m) with external fosse (Wth 1.5m; ext. D 1m). No entrance feature visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
