Wellington Bridge Railway Station

Detached four-bay single-storey railway station, opened 1906, on a rectangular plan. Overhanging pitched corrugated-iron roof with pressed or rolled iron ridge, red brick Running bond chimney stacks having "Cavetto" capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, timber bargeboards to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards retaining cast-iron downpipes. Corrugated-iron-covered walls on rendered chamfered plinth with timber monolithic "pilasters" to corners. Square-headed window openings centred on square-headed door opening (west) with shallow sills, and timber surrounds framing timber casement windows centred on timber panelled door having overlight. Square-headed integral opening (east) with timber monolithic "pilasters" supporting timber lintel on spandrels. Square-headed flanking window openings with shallow sills, and timber surrounds framing timber casement windows. Set on island platform.

A railway station identified as an important component of the early twentieth-century built heritage of south County Wexford on account of the connections with the development of the Fishguard and Rosslare Railway (FRR) line opened (1906) by the Fishguard and Rosslare Railways and Harbours (FRRH) Company with the architectural value of the composition, one adhering to a standardised prototype seen also at Campile (1906; demolished) and Duncormick (1906; demolished), confirmed by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form; the expeditious corrugated-iron surface finish (cf. 15700322; 15703006); and the oversailing roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the timber boarded interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of the composition. Furthermore, an adjacent signal box (see 15704047); and an adjacent footbridge (see 15704048), all continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of a neat self-contained ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a rural village street scene.
