What is recorded here

Site of Church is a church in Ballynastraw (ballaghkeen By.), County Wexford, Ireland. The probable site of the parish church of Ballyhuskard sits on a gentle east-facing slope, with a north-south stream approximately 90 metres to the east and within a rectangular graveyard defined by earthen banks. A 1615 Visitation recorded that the church and chancel were in ruins, while John O'Donovan noted the existence of the south wall, measuring 3 metres in length and 3 metres in height, of a church dedicated to St. Peter which has since disappeared.
Located on a gentle E-facing slope with a N-S stream c. 90m to the E. This is the probable site of the parish church of Ballyhuskard within a rectangular graveyard (dims. c. 70m E-W; c. 35m N-S) defined by earthen banks. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 Pat Redmond was the curate, and the church and chancel were in ruins (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 272). John O'Donovan writing c. 1839 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2. 98 9) records the existence of the S wall (L 3m; H 3m) of a church which was dedicated to St. Peter and which has since disappeared. There is a granite bullaun stone (dims. 0.7m x 0.65m; H c. 0.2m) with a single basin (diam. 0.34m; D 0.1m) in the graveyard. The site of St Peter's Well (WX026-018----), at which pattern was held on 29th June until c. 1800 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 2, 99) lies c. 100m to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 11 July 2012 Amended: 4 Sep. 2013
