Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Ballynasleigh in County Kilkenny is a deserted medieval settlement where an old ruined church still stands beside forgotten earthworks. The town vanished before modern memory, leaving behind a sacred anchor and the faint shape of streets no longer walked. Perhaps people lived there in quiet confidence, believing the church would outlast them, and it did.
There is a 19th-century reference to, 'the townland called Ballynasleigh, in which appear the remains of an ancient town and an old ruined church' (Anon. 1874-5, 486). The location of a deserted settlement is unknown with this townland, however, the church referred to is probably KK004-002---- and it is possible that the earthworks noted in the late 19th century are in some proximity to the church.
