Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygriffin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for us. They belong to the displaced children of angels, banned from heaven but forbidden to touch the ground. They built these rings in darkness, crafting homes from earth and shadow because sunlight would burn them. The local people knew better than to approach. They left the rings alone, respecting the bitter creativity of outcasts who shaped beauty only in the dark.
In pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Farm building built on site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
