What is recorded here
Indicated is a circular rath on a marshy Clare hillock, its steep earthen scarp still standing tall while the outer fosse holds rainwater like a forgotten moat. The dense grass hides the interior, but the NE causeway still cuts across the wet depression, inviting entry into a space that has watched Liscannor Bay for centuries. It is the kind of place where human life feels absent until dusk, when the bay light and marsh air make the empty ring feel deliberately held back.
On a hillock in marshy pasture with good views across Liscannor Bay to the S. Hachured on both the first (1840) and Cassini (1916) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Classified as an enclosure in the RMP (1996). A circular rath (int. diams. 27.5m E-W; 26m N-S) is defined by an earthen bank and scarp with traces of an outer fosse. The steep, overgrown scarp (H 1-1.2m) is present around the entire monument and a low bank (int. H 0.2m; Wth 2m) survives at N and NE. The outer fosse (Wth 1m) is visible as a wet depression encircling the scarp and there is a possible original entrance gap (Wth 2m) with a corresponding causeway across the fosse at NE. The densely overgrown interior is level with no apparent features.

A circular ringfort on a hillock in Ballyellery, likely dating to the early medieval period, with historical recognition on 19th- and early 20th-century maps. Local tradition may associate it with fairy lore common to such sites in western Ireland.
