Ballybrickoge is a motte-and-bailey castle buried under grass and memory in County Westmeath. Its mound still rises through rough pasture, marked on old maps as an ancient castle and perhaps hiding a forgotten courtyard beside it. People may have lived there, watched the land or fled storms inside its wooden walls before time forgot their names.

Situated in gently undulating, rough pasture. Earthwork (WM031-013----) lies c. 150m to E. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a subrectangular-shaped feature. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a substantial oval-shaped mound annotated ‘Ancient Castle (Supposed Site of)’. Monument is visible tody as a partially tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography, which may have an adjoining bailey. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.
