What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Assolas is a circular earthwork with an inner bank, fosse and partial outer bank beside Raheen house. People may have lived there before fields took it over, or the fairies may have kept the ring for themselves. The broken entrances and planted bank suggest both worlds still share the same ground.
In tillage, atop rise to NE of Raheen house. Circular area (39m N-S) enclosed by inner earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.35m) planted with trees; intervening fosse (D 0.8m); low outer bank ENE->SW. Inner bank disturbed to NW where bank material removed from between trees and dumped elsewhere on bank; pathway through interior joined by two breaks in bank to NE (Wth c. 8m) and SW (Wth c. 8m). Outer bank depicted all round on 1937 OS 6-inch map; Bowman (1934, 40) describes outer bank as 'levelled in several places'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
