Cross-slab in Ardagh

In Templemore graveyard (SL034-048002-). One of six slabs (see also SL034-048006-; SL034-048007-; SL034-048008-; SL034-048009-; SL034-048011-) carved with crosses with expanded terminals were identified in 1994 used as grave-markers, within the graveyard but all are now obscured by overgrowth (pers. comm. M. B. Timoney). These slabs have been identified as being Early Christian in date (pers. comm. C. Manning). Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th centuries AD), based on the style of the cross-carved slab. These slabs may have had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, possibly associated with early monastic or ecclesiastical sites in the area.
