Burial ground in Aghnashingan — Report the wrong picture

Aghnashingan is a burial ground hidden inside a rath in County Longford. People once removed headstones from its interior and forced them into the nearby field boundary, turning sacred markers into ordinary wall material. The dead may have watched their own names dragged from darkness into sunlight, exposed as stones for livestock to rub against.

Within the interior of a rath (LF018-058001-). A report in 1976 (SMR file) noted that the rath had at one time been used as a 'graveyard' and that 'headstones' removed from the interior were incorporated in the field boundary to the NW. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 7 June 2013

A ringfort with a later burial function; significance lies in the reuse of the site for funerary purposes, indicating changing land use over time.
