R C Church

In a graveyard (DG019-005001-). This may be the location of a medieval church, of which there are now no visible remains. It is believed to be the site of Desertegny, an early monastic foundation (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 379). Davies (1940) recorded the following: 'Greenhill graveyard now occupied by a ruined chapel, but believed to be the original parish graveyard with a church which had been abandoned by 1693. The original graveyard partly outside the modern enclosure and behind the chapel was circular'. The current church, which stands in the N half of the graveyard, is late 18th or early 19th-century in date, and is indicated on the 1836 OS 6-inch map as ‘R.C. Chapel’. It is a ruined, roofless structure of mortared stone, aligned NW−SE, with Gothic-style windows and doorway. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 30 July 2018
