Portsalon is one of the beach areas mapped by Donegal County Council in its Regulation and Control of Certain Beaches record. The council shape supplies the centre point used here; the beach's local history still needs to be deepened.
The great golden curve of sand on Lough Swilly at Portsalon. Once voted the second most beautiful beach in the world by a British newspaper poll, and it has never really argued with the title. A blue flag beach with the Knockalla mountains behind it.
