Main ReceptionVisitor information · 170 yd

Explorer Tom Main Reception bragged about surviving a storm in 1987, but the truth is it was just a really windy Tuesday that made its windows rattle a bit too hard. It loves telling this story to anyone who stands outside long enough to listen to its dramatic tale. Bring your nan, she'll know more than me.

tallaght crossVisitor information · 259 yd

Explorer Tom Tallaght cross hates the guy who eats chips at 2 AM because he never throws the wrapper in the bin, which is a crime. It looks like it's trying to hold together four different directions of traffic with just sheer willpower. Bring a notebook and write the bit I made up.

SpringfieldNamed rock · 713 yd

Explorer Tom Springfield in County Dublin is recorded as a named rock, which is weird because there’s also a hotel nearby. Maybe the rock got jealous of the accommodation? Take a selfie next to it if you find the actual stone.

Ecclesiastical enclosure in TallaghtEcclesiastical enclosure · 802 yd

Explorer Tom Ecclesiastical enclosure in Tallaght: Test trenches found two deep ditches here that might be part of an inner wall. I’m baffled because such a quiet spot hides such complex layers of medieval defense right under our feet.

Saint Maelruain's Church (Tallaght)Church/chapel · 814 yd

Explorer Tom St Maelruain's Church in Tallaght has a roof so spiky I think it’s trying to poke the sky in the eye. It’s got that Gothic vibe going on, but I bet if it had Instagram it would just post photos of its own shadows. Give it a nod and tell it to keep those spikes sharp.

Font in TallaghtFont · 814 yd

Explorer Tom Font in Tallaght. Known as St. Maelruan's Griddle and Loaf, this basin has uneven sides. I can almost smell the bread baking! If it baked a loaf, it must have been a very heavy, granite one.

presbytery/parochial/curate's house863 yd

Explorer Tom The Presbytery in Tallaght is a pair of semi-detached houses from 1825 with an unusual attic dormer. It’s roughcast and symmetrical, sitting right by the church. Check if the door is ajar and listen for prayers.

CastleCastle, unclassified · 1074 yd

Explorer Tom Tallaght Castle was likely just a gate tower for something much bigger that’s now gone. Monk Mason drew it back in 1818, so it definitely existed then. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals anyway.

Belgard RoadMemorial · 1507 yd

Explorer Tom Belgard Road has an imaginary twin across the sea that keeps sending postcards about how much better its pavement is, which annoys the locals here no end every single time one arrives. It was opened by Mr Barry Desmond in 1981, who probably thought he was doing a great favor for the neighborhood by naming it after himself. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than me.

Belgard CastleCastle, tower house · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Belgard Castle has a fairy dispute over parking rights that has been going on since the 15th century and shows no sign of ending. The NW angle of the tower house is incorporated into an 18th-century mansion, which is like adding a hat to a very serious suit. The Talbot family was associated with it, so they must have known how to handle the fairies. Be dramatically windswept if you stand near it.

Gary Miller MemorialMemorial · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Gary Miller Memorial in County Dublin is a tribute to someone named Gary. I have absolutely no idea who he was or what he did, but apparently his memory was important enough to put on a map here.

Corkagh ParkPark · 2.2 mi

Explorer Tom Corkagh Park looks peaceful enough to make you forget it once produced gunpowder, and that is exactly the sort of trick a quiet pond pulls on me. Mills worked on the old Clondalkin estate in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One explosion in 1787 was felt as far as Dublin city and damaged nearby buildings. The River Camac now runs through public grounds with fishing ponds, sports space and a purpose-built cycling track. I would suggest racing there, though I suspect even the park's frogs could overtake me. Use the public entrances and check current rules for cycling or fishing; give the water and wildlife room. Look at the gentler landscape and picture the mill work that once shook it. Corkagh has changed its noise very much for the better.
