What is recorded here

On a slight N-facing slope. About 15 grass-covered pits (dims c. 10-15m x. c. 4m; D c. 0.5m) generally aligned E-W form two rows c. 50m apart, covering an area of c. 6 ha (c. 16 acres). Archaeological testing (02E1222) over the E extremity of the area failed to recover any related material (Read 2004e). Preliminary testing (15E0588) of pit features suggests the pits tested are non- archaeological and are likely to be of geological origin. One unrelated isolated pit (diam. 0.75m; D 0.10m) was identified (O’Connell, 2016). This testing has been carried out on behalf of Roscommon County Council, as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghderreen - Scramogue road development.
