Partially indicated

Situated in grassland, on W facing slope of low ridge at base of Red Hill with Knavinstown church and graveyard 300m to W and Knavinstown House 190m to SW. Cropmark of large circular area (approx. diam. 58m) visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph and on earlier OSI aerial photographs. The field was ploughed around the winter of 2016 and skeletal material was identified in the plough soil in late September 2017. This material came from the interior of the cropmark enclosure which may indicate that the monument was a large barrow/ring-ditch. All that remains of this levelled monument is a slight rise of the ground which may indicate the curving line of the enclosure from SE-S only. The monument is not depicted on an any edition of the OS 6-inch map. However a field boundary running NE-SW depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map and now levelled kicks out in a semi-circular fashion at the location of the cropmark. The bend in the field fence probably indicates that the field boundary may have formed part of the large circular enclosure. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 14 June 2018
