Large semicircular graveyard (int. dims. 70m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen bank and stone wall. This is the site of an early foundation which O'Connell (1965, 455) identified with the church of SS Patrick, Carthach and Brigid, noted in historical documents in 1422 and 1425. There are no visible remains of this early church. In the NW quadrant of the graveyard are the remains of a ruined 16th-century rectangular church (dims. 18m E-W; 10m N-S) containing a doorway in the S wall and the remains of two damaged windows. The N wall is featureless and only the foundations of the W wall survive. Davies recorded the remains of a window in the E wall describing it as 'a pointed cusped lintel arch, 8 ins wide, unglazed and with slightly concave chamfer on outer edge' which most likely surmounted a lancet and was reused from the earlier church. Within the graveyard is a small crude cross of unknown date and a graveslab with an inscription dating to 1688.

The ArcadeHouse · 1587 yd

Explorer Tom The Arcade in Kilnaleck is absolutely sick of people asking if it sells shoes, because no, it just has a really fancy Art-Deco front and zero interest in footwear. Its Vitrolite shopfront shines so bright it might actually blind you from across the street one day. Don't get too close to that chrome.

St Patrick's Roman Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 1760 yd

Explorer Tom St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church is showing off its Gothic Revival details like cut ashlar surrounds and quatrefoil windows because it was built after Catholic Emancipation. It’s all very well-executed and contrasts with the older barn churches around it. Pretend you’re about to be baptized!

Deer ParkWood · 1.0 mi

Explorer Tom This other Deer Park was nearly sold for a horse because someone miscounted the decimals. The owner panicked, but then realized the wood was worth more than any equine bargain. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than me.

Aghakilmore LowerMountain / peak · 1.5 mi

Explorer Tom Aghakilmore Lower is posting about its views like it’s a five-star resort, but honestly, it just looks like a very confused hill trying to impress you. It’s got that 'I’m famous' energy with zero substance behind it. Leave nothing but footprints and a bad pun for the locals.

Portal tomb in CarrickacroyPortal tomb · 1.6 mi

Explorer Tom Portal tomb in Carrickacroy has a story about a poet falling in the ditch nearby, which adds some necessary drama to the stones. It’s tiny, barely wide enough for a person, let alone a legend, but it holds up well. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think.

DrumbrucklisMountain / peak · 2.6 mi

Explorer Tom A fiddler played on Drumbrucklis all night last century and he’s still going strong if you listen very closely at dusk. Bring wellies and low expectations, leave delighted, and maybe bring a fiddle along just to join in with the ghost band.

Portal tomb in DuffcastlePortal tomb · 2.7 mi

Explorer Tom Portal tomb in Duffcastle has one side missing, so it’s basically a door with no frame. It leans in like it’s listening to your secrets. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals and they judge everyone.

Giant's GraveArchaeological place · 2.7 mi

Explorer Tom Giant's Grave hears everything through its walls, including the sheep gossiping about the weather and the farmers complaining about their back pain. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as I promise, so don’t say I didn’t warn you about the chill factor.

Bawn in DuffcastleBawn · 2.8 mi

Explorer Tom Bawn in Duffcastle had a prophecy that said it would float away on a Tuesday, which never happened, so we’re all still here. It’s just a subrectangular patch on a scarp, pretending to be mysterious and deep. Find the date carved somewhere and feel clever.

Ardkill ForestForest · 3.7 mi

Explorer Tom Ardkill Forest really hates visitors who bring their dogs off the lead because they leave paw prints all over the ancient history like little mud stamps. It’s trying very hard to look dignified while shaking out fur from its branches with great disdain. Sit on a wall near it and pretend you're in a painting.

Crane IslandIslet · 3.8 mi

Explorer Tom The other Crane Island has a bird that refuses to leave, even when the wind tries to blow it off to the next county. It’s got serious roots here. Bring a friend who talks too much and let the place shut them up.

Ross CastleCastle, tower house · 5.2 mi

Explorer Tom Ross Castle is where a dance was held that went so far they forgot how to stop, and no one has recovered since. You’ve got a four-storey tower that’s been restored from ruins, which is basically a skeleton in a very expensive suit. It’s definitely not going to let you touch the curtains without asking permission first. Visit, then text me what you think. I'll pretend to read it.
