Derrin Bridge

Triple-arch limestone road bridge, built c.1800, over River Erne, having large central segmental arch flanked by slightly smaller arches. Roughly coursed squared rubble stone spandrels, abutments, and piers. V-cutwaters with pyramidal cappings. Cut stone voussoirs with raised keystone and squared rubble stone barrel. Squared rubble stone parapet with replacement concrete coping having incised date 1943 and pyramidal capstones to piers.

A historic bridge with well proportioned graduated arches, constructed tradionally in locally-sourced squared rubble limestone and enhanced by expert stone masonry details such as the raised keystone. Probably constructed with funding from the county Grand Jury, the bridge is a good example of the type that was built as part of the expanding road infrastructure in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It makes an important contribution to the architectural character of its landscape setting.
