Ogham stone in Bunkilla

Ogham stone

What is recorded here

This long, narrow stone (2.2m; 0.3m x 0.15m) was discovered in 1982 during drainage works. Lankford (1993, 6-7) read the inscription as ANM MAQQI-LASIR K[O]I MA(Q)QI BIR(R)AC(I)AS or ANM MAQQI-LASIRE(O)N MAQQI BIR(R)ACIAS. However, some of the letters read by him may be from an earlier inscription on the stone. ANM MAQQI-LASIRE MAQQI BIRRAC 'name/inscription of Mac-Laisre son of Berrach' is another possible interpretation. This stone is now in the National Museum of Ireland (see DU018-418----). (Power 1997, no. 7955) This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
