Nun's Island in Lough Ree, County Westmeath, became a desperate sanctuary in 1641 when the nuns of the Order of St. Clare fled Cromwellian forces from their convent at Bethlehem. They took shelter in an existing medieval church, leaving behind a name that still identifies the wooded islet. The church ruin and its irregular drystone enclosure remain hidden beneath scrub, preserving the sudden panic and temporary safety of that winter.
