Niamh Bhreathnach was born in Loughlinstown, County Dublin, on 1 June 1945, the daughter of Breandán Breathnach, a civil servant and collector of traditional music. She grew up in that same coastal county, later representing Dún Laoghaire and serving twice as Minister for Education before dying in Blackrock on 6 February 2023. Her life moved from a music-collecting home to national classrooms, carrying local memory into public policy.
