Newtown Burying Ground

Newtown Burying Ground is a sub-rectangular enclosure in Mountbagnall, County Louth, measuring roughly seventy by fifty metres, with overgrown church foundations in its north-west corner. It sits just south-west of a Norman motte and bailey, linking medieval settlement, worship and death in one small landscape. The earthwork and ruined church suggest a community that gathered, prayed and buried its dead within a few steps of a fortified mound. Little public attention has reached the site since a brief 1941 reference, leaving it quiet, half-hidden and dependent on imagination to complete what stone and soil no longer say.
