Mound in Morgans North

On the S edge of an inlet of the Shannon Estuary, c. 20m to WNW of a small stream and its confluence with the River Shannon. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified in 1999 as a mound (Site 17) by Celie O’Rahilly when walking the route of a proposed ESB power line. Described as a mound orientated WNW-ESE which is covered solely in hawthorn trees. At ground level on the SW side is a recess in the fabric of the mound which is lined with two parallel drystone walls approximately 2m apart. The fabric of the mound is a dark gritty sand which is in contrast to the surrounding clay subsoil.
