Mound in Meelaghans

Not visible at ground level. Described in 1974 by the Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society as 'The mound is almost square in shape being roughly 20 x 19 sq. metres. It is about 5 feet high around the edges. In the southern half of it traces of a small rectangular embankment are seen. These are 2'-3' high. The edges are now supported with stone but their loose appearance suggests they are field stones recently thrown in. Large trees grow on all sides of the embankment. It is in Smollen's field' (OHAS file 1974). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
