Mound in Leana

On a knoll in undulating improved pasture. Not recorded on OS mapping but indicated on Robinson’s map of the Burren (1977). Listed as ‘Enclosure (possible)’ in the RMP (1996). This low (H 0.3-0.8m) subrectangular, flat-topped mound (base dims. 17m NNW-SSE; 13.4m WSW-ENE; upper surface dims. 15.6m NNW-SSE; 11.4m WSW-ENE) carries two smaller flat-topped mounds on its W (diam. 2.5m E-W; H 0.3m) and E (diam. 5.5m E-W; H 0.3m) edges. Neolithic passage tomb; dates to the earlier part of the Neolithic period in Ireland (c. 3500–2500 BCE). Its location in the Burren suggests it is part of a broader network of megalithic monuments associated with early farming communities.
