Mound in Ballyellery

In marshy estuarine grassland c. 40m N of the confluence of the SW-flowing Dealagh and W-flowing Inagh rivers, in an area labelled ‘Covered by Spring Tides’ on the OS 25-inch map (1897), and overlooked by higher ground on all sides. Hachured as a raised subcircular area on the Cassini edition (1916) of the OS 6-inch map. Noted by Westropp (1905, 360): ‘To the north of the castle [‘Dough Castle’ (CL015-089002-), c. 470m to S] and creek is a furze-covered knoll in a marsh, which may be a crannoge.’ A densely overgrown, roughly circular earth and stone mound (base diam. c. 34m; surface diam. 19m; H 2m) is defined by a gentle scarp.   Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Eve Campbell   Date of upload: 7-10-2025
