What is recorded here

Monalough Fort is a circular earthen ring in County Limerick, not a fairy fort as local story claims. Its scarped edge, external ditch and south-west causeway still mark a deliberate human boundary on a west-facing slope. The clear interior now holds winter fodder, turning an old defensive shape into ordinary farm use while the marshy pond beside it keeps the place damp and alive.

In pasture, on W-facing slope. Circular area (34m N-S; 35m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (H 2.45m; Wth 3m) with external fosse (D 1.05m; Wth 3.8m). Entrance (Wth 4m) with causeway across fosse at SW. Fosse best preserved WNW->SW. Marshy pond (c. 35m N-S; c. 45m E-W) located immediately outside base of scarp SW->WNW. Field boundary to SW of site removed. Interior level, dry and clear of overgrowth; used as a fodder area in winter months. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
