Monaloo House

Detached L-plan five-bay two-storey former country house, built c. 1870, having two-storey extension with single-pitched corrugated-iron roof to north elevation of return. Now in use as house. Hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks and sheeted eaves. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls. Square-headed openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and cut limestone sills. Tripartite timber sliding sash window to centre bay of front elevation. Stairlight to rear with timber sliding sash window having coloured glass. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door and overlight, having rendered surround comprising Doric pilasters and cut limestone steps and plinth blocks. Retains interior features. Outbuildings to rear. Rubble stone boundary walls with square-profile piers to site entrance.

Symmetry, simplicity and order of the front façade and the emphasis on the entrance, are typical of the classical influence on large houses in rural Ireland. The classical order to the doorway, an overt classical reference. The retention of much fabric, including timber sliding sash windows and shutters, enhances the form and structure of the building. It is enhanced and contextualised by the outbuildings to the rear.
