Moated site in Marlhill (knockgraffon Par.)

On flat ground in wet, marshy terrain with gentle hummocks. In pasture. Monument identified on aerial photography (Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd, 2004). A rectangular platform (diam. 38m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by a fosse (Wth 2.7-4.2m; D 0.35) and a slight outer bank (H above fosse 0.25-0.4; ext. H 0.15-0.25m; Wth at top 1.6-2.7; Wth at base 2.5-4.6m). Flag irises are growing in the fosse. The fosse and outer bank are best preserved on the S side. There is a possible entrance (Wth 5.5m) at the E end of the N side. Externally there is higher hummocky ground to the SE corner from a south-westerly direction which may have provided a natural route through the marsh. There are a couple of wet hollows within the interior (diam. c. 3m x 5m and 5m).
