Bawn in Carrigeen (knockgraffon Par.)

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'The sd lands hath on it a Bawne & a thatcht house' which in 1640 was in the proprietorship of 'Benet Sall of Cashell Alderman Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 232). In a farmyard in undulating grassland, the NW angle of the bawn survives with a circular turret (H 2.65m) projecting from the wall by 2.5m. The bawn is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble. A later stone wall of an outbuilding continues westward from the turret. A wall (T 0.6m), which appears to be the keyed into the turret, runs eastward for 18.6m. Approx. 8.5m further E there is a house (TS069-071002-) aligned N-S which may form the NE angle of the bawn. The walls of the house are 0.6-0.65m thick, consistent with the thickness of the possible bawn wall. Outbuildings to the SW may incorporate the bawn wall in the rear wall (H c. 3m), forming a much of the western end of the S wall and southern end of the W of the bawn. The external SW angle is heavily overgrown with ivy. If the extant walls visible are the original bawn walls it measured c. 37m N-S and c. 33m E-W. Benet Sall, an Irish Papist alderman from Cashell, held the Bawn in Carrigeen in 1640. It is remembered as part of the landed estate records documented in the Civil Survey, reflecting Catholic landownership in Ireland before the Cromwellian confiscations.
