Moated site

What is recorded here

In level tillage. Sub-square area (dims. c. 30m E-W; c. 28m N-S) defined by bank (overall Wth 7.25m; Wth at top 1m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.95m) at E-end of N-side, E, S and S-end of W-side and is reduced to scarp (Wth 2.8m; H 1.6m) at N-end of W-side and W-end of N-side. Bank has possibly been reduced in antiquity at NW corner where it is least defined. Substantial fosse (overall Wth 6.6-7m; basal Wth 2m; D 0.85-1.1m) is infilled intermittently with earthen spoil and stone and there is some suggestion of a levelled outer bank (H 0.15-0.2m), though this may be an accumulation of soil at the edge of the plough zone. Entrance (overall Wth 4m; basal Wth 1.75m) mid-way along E-side has a causeway which may be a recent modification due to dumping of soil and stone. Interior is generally level and has a thicket of deciduous trees. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
