Mill

The precise location of a watermill shown standing beside Ballysimon Castle (LI005-057----) on the 1657 Down Survey map of Kilmurry parish has not been identified. This medieval watermill was located on the River in an area to the SE of Ballysimon Bridge possibly where a 'Marble Factory and Mill Pond' are depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. A building standing on the N bank of a stream in this area on the 25-inch could be located in the area where the mill is shown on the 1657 Down Survey map and therefore the location of the monument has been changed. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that in 1640 Edmund Bourke fitz Richard of Ballysimon possessed a 'ruined castle A Mill & two Mill and two Millseates' (Simington 1938, 465).
