What is recorded here
Freestanding triangular-profile cast-iron milestone, installed c.1890, with chamfered triangular top. Raised lettering and numbering in relief reading: Scibb’’ 17/Cork 36, Roscarb’y 4, Clonak’ 4.
This milestone is a notable feature of the roadside. Its triangular form and simple well-executed detailing make it instantly recognisable and legible to passers-by. It is a fine example of the well-designed, utilitarian objects which iron casting produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Milestones of this type are becoming increasingly rare with only a small number avoiding damage or removal.
