Midden in Rathcoursey East

On cliff top, at S side of Ballynacorra river, in estuary of Cork Harbour. No visible surface trace. Schlicting (1973, 18) suggests covered by modern debris. Coleman (1938, 42) recorded a layer of oyster shells 104 feet long; 8 feet wide between cliff edge and East Ferry road; and 2 to 3 feet in thickness. A radio-carbon determination of 1050 +/- 50 bp (calibrated date range 780 – 1060 AD) was recovered from oyster shell at this midden (Laboratory: Beta 161649) (Milner & Woodman 2007, 103).
