Midden

What is recorded here

On S side of Douglas river where it enters Lough Mahon. No visible surface trace. According to Atkinson (1874, 261. no. 12) 'nearer to Cork, the Cork and Passage Railway, about 100 yards from Rochestown Station, passes over a shell-mound'. By 1930s Power (1930, 123) and Coleman (1938, 43) could find no trace of site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
