Midden in Magherabeg

Midden

What is recorded here

On the floor of a large valley amongst the sand-hills at the base of the Magharees Peninsula, Knowles (1901, 258) recorded a large number of shell middens composed of shells of cockles, periwinkles, oysters and limpets. Also noted were hammer stones, broken and split stones, a small boulder from which flakes had been removed to create a cutting edge, and bones and teeth of bear, red deer, horse and a cetaceous animal. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 22. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
