Midden in An Clochán is a shell bank beside the Owenmore estuary, blocked from human reach by large sea-break boulders. It may be a discarded kitchen heap or merely a tidal accumulation of mussel and cockle shells. The distinction matters because one belongs to people and the other belongs to the sea.

Located about 300m S of Cloghane, on the W side of the estuary of the Owenmore river, is what appears to be a shell midden composed of mussel and cockle shells. Access to the feature is prevented by the very large boulders which have been placed in front of it as a sea-break, and it is possible that this is a natural accumulation of shells rather than a midden resulting from human activity.
