Formaoil Castle vanished before Fermoyle House rose, leaving no wall for modern eyes to judge. In 1843, diggers broke through earth and found partial foundations, proving the castle had existed even though it no longer shows itself. The site lies near the seashore at the south side of Brandon Bay, where tide, wind and time may have finished what human forgetfulness began.

Fermoyle Castle: There are no visible remains of this castle which was situated a short distance NE of Fermoyle House. During the construction of the latter, c. 1843, the partial foundations of a building, presumed to be the castle, were exposed (Hitchcock 1855, 356). Fermoyle Castle was likely built in the 16th or 17th century by a local Gaelic or Anglo-Irish family, though specific builders are not recorded. It is remembered as an archaeological site of historical interest, with foundations discovered during 19th-century construction, indicating medieval or early modern settlement in the area.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
