The mass rock from Knockananima (RO011-167002-), c. 1.2km to the N, was incorporated into the original altar of the Roman Catholic church of Drumlion at Drumercool when the church was built in 1856 (Keenehan et al. 2006). Mass-rock in Drumercool is associated with the Catholic tradition of celebrating clandestine Masses during the Penal Times in Ireland. The rock, originally from Knockananima, was repurposed as part of the altar in the 1856 church at Drumlion, reflecting the continuity of religious practice and devotion in the face of persecution.
