Man-made underground passage in Knocknagallagh

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Knocknagallagh holds a man-made underground passage on the east side of its ringfort, though no surface trace remains for anyone to point at. The absence does not diminish the claim; it invites imagination about hammers, digging tools and the breath of people who shaped stone beneath the grass. What is missing becomes a question instead of a wound, and the ringfort answers by keeping its edge sharp.
Tradition of Man-made underground passage in E side ringfort (CO110-069---). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
