MacCarthy Reagh Castle vanished into a Cork field, leaving only a stone wall and a castle wall story behind. The ground swallowed its halls while people kept naming the hidden shape.

In overgrown field to S of farmyard. Indicated on OS 6-inch map (1842) by dotted square. No visible surface trace. Stone wall to W of site. Locally known as "castle wall". According to O'Donoghue (1986, 110) and Healy (1988, 234), MacCarthy Reagh Castle. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Burrane Castle was likely built during the medieval period, possibly by a local Gaelic lord or Anglo-Norman family. It is remembered for its historical presence in the landscape and the survival of its name and partial earthwork remains, despite the absence of visible surface structures today.
