What is recorded here
Kilmore’s hidden passage appeared in May 1989 when drainage cut through a south-facing pasture slope, exposing a T-shaped earth chamber nearly seven metres long. Jerry O’ullivan measured its narrow creepway, small air-vent annexe and back-filled shaft before the site was buried again. It may have belonged to an early church or burial ground nearby, but the earth kept that much darker.
In pasture, on S-facing slope; discovered in May 1989 and investigated by Jerry O'Sullivan (UCC). T-shaped, earth-cut, area (L 6.6m; Wth 8.8m) exposed by drainage cutting (Wth 3m; D 1.5m) running N-S through centre; whether this area was originally one or more chambers could not be determined. Small annexe (Wth 0.9m) at southernmost extremity out of which leads an air-vent. Creepway (Wth 0.5m) from easternmost extremity, runs ina SE direction to possible further chambers which could not be explored. Back-filled vertical shaft in westernmost extremity may have been original entrance. Floor covered with spoil; greatest height of ceilings above spoil is 1.3m. Site back-filled after inspection. Associated with possible early ecclesiastical site (CO081-038----); burial ground (CO081-003----) c. 55m to ESE.
